Relaxation does not always mean simply switching off.
Many people associate relaxation with the body immediately becoming soft and the mind becoming quiet. Yet sometimes something else is needed first: the ability to notice how tense we actually are.
Noticing Tension
Perhaps the shoulders are slightly raised, the jaw is tense or the breath is shallower than usual. Perhaps the body remains somewhat activated even after the external reason for it has passed.
Such changes are not automatically a problem. They can first simply be noticed as part of the present experience.
Not Forcing Relaxation
Relaxation can itself become another task: “I really need to switch off now.”
But relaxation cannot always be forced.
Sometimes it arises more easily when there is less pressure to achieve a particular state. A slower pace, quiet and conscious attention can provide a supportive setting.
Touch and Rest
Warmth, mindful touch, rest and a slower pace can create a space in which the body can be noticed more consciously again.
In a wellness massage, therefore, the massage itself is not the only thing at the centre. With warm oil and mindful touch, such a treatment can create space for rest, pleasant body awareness and a restorative pause. The possibility of stepping out of everyday life for a while and returning attention to the body can also be part of the experience.
From Relaxation to Self-Awareness
Perhaps relaxation is not only the release of tension, but also a rediscovery of what the body needs right now.
Sometimes that means rest. Sometimes movement. Sometimes warmth or touch. And sometimes simply a moment in which nothing has to be done.
Mindful bodywork therefore does not try to create a particular state. Rather, it creates space for awareness and for a more conscious contact with one’s own experience.
Sometimes relaxation does not begin with letting something go. It begins with noticing what is here right now.
